📧 Understanding Focused Inbox in Outlook

Focused Inbox helps you prioritize the emails that matter most. Your inbox is divided into two tabs:

  • Focused – Important emails from people you interact with most.
  • Other – Newsletters, automated messages, and less urgent mail.

You can switch between tabs at any time, and Outlook will notify you when messages arrive in Other.

đź“… When Will Focused Inbox Appear?

Focused Inbox began rolling out on Outlook for iOS and Android and is now available in most modern versions, including:

  • Outlook 2016 for Windows & Mac
  • Outlook on the Web
  • Windows 10 Mail App
Important: For the latest features, use Microsoft 365 (ProPlus). The older Professional Plus edition only receives security updates, not new features like Focused Inbox.

⚙️ How Does Focused Inbox Work?

Focused Inbox uses Microsoft’s intelligence to filter messages based on:

  • Who you email and interact with most often
  • Message content (e.g., newsletters, system notifications)

You can always fine-tune by right-clicking messages and choosing Move to Focused or Move to Other. Outlook will learn from your choices and adjust automatically.

đź“‚ What About Clutter?

If you used Clutter, you’ll be prompted to switch to Focused Inbox. Once you do:

  • No new messages will go into the Clutter folder.
  • Instead, less important messages will appear under the Other tab.
  • Anything already in your Clutter folder stays there until you move or delete it.

📝 Changing How Your Messages Are Organized

Here’s how to move messages between tabs in Outlook on the Web:

  1. In your inbox, right-click the message you want to move.
  2. From Focused → to Other: Select Move → Move to Other Inbox.
Choose Always Move if you want all future messages from this sender to go to Other.
  3. From Other → to Focused: Select Move → Move to Focused Inbox.
Choose Always Move if you want all future messages from this sender to go to Focused.
Tip: On the Windows or Mac desktop apps, the process is similar. Right-click any message and use the “Move” options to teach Outlook your preference.

âś… Summary

Focused Inbox doesn’t remove or delete messages—it simply organizes them. You’re always in control, and with a few adjustments, Outlook will learn how to keep your inbox clean and prioritized.
