What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account.
Instead of relying only on a password, MFA requires you to verify your identity in two or more ways — such as a password plus a code sent to your phone.
Note: Think of MFA as a second lock on your front door. Even if someone learns your password, they cannot access your account without the second factor.
Downloading and Installing Microsoft Authenticator
For Android Users
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator and install the app.
For iPhone Users
- Open the App Store on your iPhone.
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator and download the app.
Tip: Be sure you are installing Microsoft Authenticator (by Microsoft Corporation), not a look-alike app.
Adding Your School Account to Microsoft Authenticator
- Open Microsoft Authenticator and allow notification access when prompted.
- Add a School Account: Choose Work or School Account when setting up.
- Scan the QR Code:
On your computer, step through the setup wizard until a QR code appears.
Use your phone to scan the code — the account will be added automatically.
- Verify with a Number Match:
A two-digit number will appear on your computer screen.
Your phone will prompt you to enter this number. Enter the code, tap Yes, and confirm with your phone’s PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID if prompted.
Warning: If you ever receive a login approval request that you did not initiate, select “It’s Not Me” immediately. This denies the attempt and notifies IT.
How MFA Works Going Forward
From now on, whenever someone tries to sign in to your account:
- You will receive a notification on your phone.
- If it’s you, approve the request by tapping Yes in Authenticator.
- If it’s not you, deny the request to block the login and alert IT.
Info: You may see a prompt when logging in from a new device or when off-site. This is normal and helps keep your account secure.
Trouble with computer or website logins, password changes, information updates.
