Creating a Google Docs Assignment in TeacherVUE
This guide walks you through assigning a Google Docs file in TeacherVUE, so each student gets their own editable copy on their Chromebook.
Step 1: Prepare Your Google Doc
- Open Google Docs and load the document you want to assign.
- Click Share in the top-right.
- Under General access, select Anyone with the link and set permissions to Viewer.
- Click Copy link to copy the shareable link.
Important: Always set access to Viewer — students will get their own copy using the modified link.
Step 2: Modify the Link to Force a Copy
Take the link you copied and change the ending:

The modified version forces students to create their own copy.
Step 3: Create the Assignment in TeacherVUE
- Log into TeacherVUE.
- Go to the Grade Book or Assignments section and select Add Assignment.
- Fill out assignment details:
- Title: Enter a clear name.
- Description: Provide instructions and paste the modified Google Docs link.
- Due Date: Set the deadline.
- Points: Assign points and attach a rubric if needed.

- (Optional) Attach supporting files or resources.
- Click Save or Publish to make it visible to students.
Step 4: Student Access and Completion
- Finding the Assignment: Students log into StudentVUE and navigate to the assignments section.
- Making a Copy: Clicking the link prompts students to select Make a copy.
- Completing Work: Students edit their copy in Google Docs and save it to their Drive.
Step 5: Submitting the Assignment
- Option 1: Upload PDF to StudentVUE
- In Google Docs: File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf)
- Upload the PDF into StudentVUE if enabled.
- Option 2: Share Google Doc
- Students click Share, enter your email, and set permissions to Editor or Viewer.
Reminder: Students should confirm that their submission is visible to you.
Step 6: Reviewing and Grading
- In TeacherVUE, open the assignment to view submissions.
- For shared Google Docs, check your email or Shared with me in Google Drive.
- Enter grades in TeacherVUE and add feedback directly or through Google Docs comments.
