Opening PDF Attachments in Outlook Without Errors
Some staff have reported the following error when opening a PDF attachment directly from Outlook:
Error Message:
The instruction at 0x… referenced memory at 0x…
The memory could not be read.
This occurs because Outlook stores attachments in a hidden temporary folder.
When a PDF is launched from this location, Adobe Reader/Acrobat may fail to load it properly, resulting in the memory error.
Fix: Always save the file first before opening it in Adobe.
Steps to Open PDFs Safely
- In Outlook, locate the PDF attachment in the email.
- Right-click on the attachment.
- Select Save As….
- Save the file to a safe location, such as your Desktop or Documents folder.
- Once saved, double-click the file to open it in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
Tip: Saving the file ensures it is fully downloaded and accessible, preventing the memory error.
Additional Notes
- This issue occurs most frequently with larger PDF files.
- Other attachment types (Word, Excel, etc.) may also be affected if opened directly from Outlook.
- If errors continue even after saving the file, ensure that Adobe Reader/Acrobat is fully updated via Help → Check for Updates.
